  10. To use Articulate Systems' QuickTime compatible drivers:

  12. • Decide which driver you need based upon the hardware device you own.  The 'Voice Impact Pro Sound Driver' works only for the Voice Impact Pro hardware.  The 'Voice Impact Sound Driver' will work with either Voice Impact or MacRecorder® hardware.

  14. • Copy the appropriate driver file into your system folder.  You may place the driver in the extensions folder when prompted.

  16. ••  Important for Mac IIfx users!  You must use the 'Serial Switch' cdev to put your machine in "compatible" mode before installing either driver.  This cdev is

  18. • Restart your machine.  You should notice the driver icon flash by with the icons for other INITs and extensions which you have installed.

  20. • Open the 'Sound' control panel, and select the device by name.  You will notice that the "Options" button is not available.  You will not be able to change the recording parameters (such as serial port, microphone input, definition of 'good', 'better', and 'best' recording qualitites, etc.) without having 'Voice Record' software.

  22. • Once the device is selected, you can record from that device into your QuickTime applications.

  26. Some limitations:

  28. • The 'Voice Impact Sound Driver' does not currently support voice activated recording, but should support it in a future release.  The 'Voice Impact Pro Sound Driver' does support this feature.

  30. • Voice Impact does not support virtual memory.  The driver will not install, and the icon will have an 'X' over it at system startup if virtual memory is enabled.  Turn off virtual memory and restart your machine.  Voice Impact Pro supports virtual memory.

  38. "Voice Impact" ($99 list price) is a basic recording device with a high-quality built in microphone and line input capability.  It is the perfect entry level device for multimedia recording.

"Voice Impact Pro" ($199 list price) utilizes its' on board DSP and digital filtering to provide the highest quality 8-bit sound recordings available from a device priced under $200.  It has a high-quality unidirectional microphone, as well as line level and microphone level input capabilities.

  42. "Voice Record" ($69 list price), is software which provides cut & paste sound editing for any 8 bit recordings.  It comes bundled with both Voice Impact and Voice Impact Pro, and is available separately for use with the Built-In Apple microphones or any other 8 bit sound digitizer.

  48. 'Voice Impact Sound Driver' and 'Voice Impact Pro Sound Driver' versions 2.2b9 are included with this QuickTime CD.  There are no known bugs in either version.  Final versions of the drivers should be available at CD press time.
